Restoran Meng Kee • Besides Lim Tayar sits along the busy stretch of Old Klang Road in Kuala Lumpur, serving up straightforward, no-frills Chinese comfort food that locals keep coming back to. This full-service restaurant is best known for its seafood, especially the signature steaming of fish heads like the Garupa and Soong varieties, done with a light, fragrant ginger sauce. It’s a familiar spot for families and groups who appreciate generous portions and dishes that focus on freshness rather than flash.

The atmosphere is casual and bustling, especially during dinner hours when the place fills up quickly. It’s the kind of neighborhood restaurant where booking ahead saves you from waiting—parking along the roadside can get tight, so early evenings are easier to navigate. Despite the steady crowd, the staff remain polite and attentive, which keeps the dining experience smooth.

The menu covers a range of classic Cantonese-style dishes, with highlights including the steam fish head, a must-order for those who love gentle flavors and fresh seafood textures. Other notable dishes featured are Specialist Tofu grilled with seasonal vegetables, Pipa Duck, Salted Egg Yolk Fried Squid, and various stir-fried greens like Kangkung Garlic and Kangkung Belacan. The curry fish head and stewed items add a different dimension for those looking for richer, more robust flavors.

This spot suits diners who want a reliable, unpretentious meal without the fuss—families, longtime local patrons, and anyone looking for generous, well-cooked seafood and traditional Chinese dishes at reasonable prices. Timing your visit for early dinner avoids the peak crowds and parking hassle, and you’ll likely witness a lively, homey environment filled with familiar faces. Restoran Meng Kee reflects the straightforward charm of an old-school Kuala Lumpur dining staple where the food speaks mostly for itself.

We ordered steam fish, curry mixed vege, lala soup, fried pork, fried sotong, pipa duck & fermented soya duck.... The dishes were nice and reasonable price. We called for booking earlier so that not disappointing. Dinner time always full house. The sitou por and workers all are polite and hardworking. Recommended

We ordered steamed lala (RM22), fried kangkung (RM13), and signature fried tofu (RM10) for two. The portions were perfect, and we enjoyed every dish. The kangkung was flavorful with dried shrimp and chili, the lala soup had a rich ginger and garlic taste, and the tofu was packed with eggy umami. Everything was served within 10 minutes. 4 Jan 2025 Second time here for dinner The ginger steamed fish (rm35) was delicious and perfectly cooked, but the head was extremely large, so the meat portion was actually less than 50% of the whole fish. We also ordered bitter gourd with egg (rm13), which was not bad and tasted quite good.

I keep finding myself back at this place; that ginger steamed fish head alongside the lala is phenomenal - honestly, a reason to go by itself. Just be aware, it gets packed on Saturdays and Sundays, meaning you’ll likely need patience or an early arrival. This spot always comes through with good eats - it doesn’t cost a fortune, really. It isn’t fancy, however if you need familiar flavors without emptying your wallet, they nail it each visit.

Giving this a 5 star review (which is very rare for me) because: 1) steam fish head was super tasty. I am a fan of steam fish and I know when the fish is not fresh. Meng Kee serves nice and fresh fish head, cooked to just the right texture., definitely not overcooked. And the sauce is perfect. 2) the sweet and sour pork is also very good. Not much flour taste and not too sweet. 3) kangkung belacan in my opinion was a bit on the spicy side. But overall if you can take spicy, then it’s ok. Overall very happy with the food. Not so thirsty after the meal which means msg is tolerable. Price is reasonable. Advise: Come early (before 6pm) to avoid the crowd. Parking will be slightly hard to find because this shop is not far from the famous Japanese buffet chain, Mitasu.

First time trying this famous restaurant. Parking is quite challenging but still manageable when early dinner hours like 6pm. Parking is along the road side. The best recommendation is their steam sung fish head only. The rest is average especially the duck. Price for the fish head for our family is like RM35 and personally is affordable and reasonable and delicious.

Been here mostly for fish head but had steamed chicken today. Tasted good but a bit delayed because it's dinnertime on weekend. Steamed half chicken Rm40, signature tofu and vegetables RM28.

Another great food store on the Old Klang Road. Ordered their famous curry fish, fried tofu and roast duck, and love all of it. Curry is very creamy and you can have two to three bowl of rice with the curry alone. Roast duck skin is very crispy and nit oily at all. 3 of us with rice and drinks costs abt RM130, very reasonable with the big portion, highly recommended.
